What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a term that is used to signify nerve pain in the leg and is caused by compression of the sciatic nerve. This type of pain usually starts in the lower back, moves deep into the buttock, and runs down the leg.
What is the Sciatic Nerve?
The sciatic nerve refers to the longest and heaviest nerve in our body. It’s essentially made up of five nerve roots: two from the lower back region known as the lumbar spine and three from the end of the spine called the sacrum. The five nerve roots join together to create a right and left sciatic nerve. On each side of your body. One sciatic nerve passes through your hips, buttocks, and down a leg, terminating just below the knee. The sciatic nerve is then divided into other nerves, which pass down into your leg, foot, and toes.
An injury to the sciatic nerve “sciatica” is uncommon, but the term “sciatica” is widely used to describe any pain that emerges in the lower back and exudes down the leg.
The elements that this pain shares in common are irritation, inflammation, pinching, or compression of a nerve in the lower back.
The common symptoms of sciatica include:
- Pain in the back or leg that becomes worse while sitting
- Burning or tingling down the leg
- Weakness, numbness, or a problem moving the leg or foot
- Continuous pain on one side of the back
- A sharp pain that makes it hard to stand up
- Acupuncture
- Soft Tissue Massage
- Adjustments (Spinal Manipulation)
